Five Fast Facts about Pirates

The stereotypical pirates flag is actually called the ‘Jolly Roger’. It is meant to intimidate
their targeted victims into surrendering, and forfeiting all of their goods.

The legendary pirate ‘Black Beard‘, whose real name was Edward Teach, was claimed to
have weaved hemp into his beard to which he would light on fire and use as an intimidation technique.

Pirates did in fact wear eye patches, which gave them the ability to adjust from
the bright sunlight above deck, to the darkness below deck. Switching the patch from one
eye to the other when going above or below.

The average career for a pirate did not last very long. Most were killed or injured in battle, and even
some of the most successful pirates of all time only lasted a few years.

Not all pirates were men. Some of the most famous female pirates include Anne Bonny, who
was the right hand woman to “Calico Jack” Rackham.
